Tommy's Big Swim

BLS-front_4-color.jpg

Tomorrow morning at 6:45am, Tommy will jump into the very chilly waters of Boston Harbor to compete in the Boston Light Swim. The Boston Light Swim has been a local tradition since 1907, and is the oldest open-water swim marathon in the United States of America. Tommy will begin the race in the water at Boston Light on Little Brewster Island (the furthermost island in Boston Harbor) and continue past George’s Island and Rainsford Island, under the Long Island Bridge, around Thompson’s Island, finishing 8 miles later at the L Street Bathhouse in South Boston. Click here to see the course that he will swim.

Tommy swam part of this race in 2006 as part of a 3 person relay while wearing a wetsuit. This time he is doing the real deal....The entire 8 miles alone and no wetsuit. The water will be around 60 degrees (that is REALLY cold folks!) Tommy and I have both been part of the boat crew for several friends that have done the Boston Light Swim in the past, and we are both so grateful that some of those same friends will serve as Tommy's crew for the race tomorrow. He will swim behind a large boat that guides his course during the race. He will probably stop about every 30 or 40 minutes to drink and eat. He is estimating that the entire race will take him about 3 or 3 1/2 hours.

If you want to follow Tommy's race real-time tomorrow, you can do so here:

Think warm thoughts for him tomorrow morning! We are so proud of him!
